Paul Polzin, Director Emeritus

Paul Polzin, Ph.D. has studied the Montana economy extensively during the past 35 years, with particular emphasis on the natural resources industry. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Michigan State University and is director emeritus of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at The University of Montana. Dr. Polzin has published peer-reviewed articles in journals such as The Annals of Regional Science, The Review of Regional Studies and Growth and Change. He has served as president of the Western Regional Science Association and the Pacific Northwest Economics Conference.

Patrick Barkey, Bureau Director

Patrick Barkey, Ph.D. has served as director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research since 2008. An economist with more than 26 years of experience in regional forecasting in both the public and private sector, Dr. Barkey is the author of several well-known studies on Montana’s energy and coal industries.He holds a doctorate in Economics from the University of Michigan. As a research economist for American Electric Power, he developed and maintained large scale models of residential and industrial energy demand.

Pete Larsen, Research Fellow

Peter Larsen is a Research Fellow at the Bureau of Business and Economic Research where he specializes in energy/electricity market economics and policy. He is also Staff Scientist and Leader of the Electricity Markets and Policy Department at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Peter conducts research and analysis on the economics of electricity reliability and resilience; energy service company industry and project trends; long-term electric utility planning; risk to infrastructure from extreme events; and islanded power systems. Peter has published his research in a number of reports, book chapters, and peer-reviewed journals including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Global Environmental Change, Annual Review of Environment and Resources, Energy Policy, and Energy Economics. Earlier in his career, Peter worked at the Institute of Social and Economic Research in Anchorage, Alaska, the Societal Impacts Program at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and Stratus Consulting (now Abt Associates). Peter holds a Ph.D. in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University; M.S. degrees from Stanford University (Management Science and Engineering) and Cornell University (Natural Resource Economics); and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Montana at Missoula.
